On Saturday, May 10, 2025, under clear blue skies and perfect spring weather, the Kankakee Farmers’ Market was transformed into a vibrant hub of hope, healing, and community connection. To kick off National Prevention Week, the Iroquois-Kankakee Regional Office of Education’s Life Education Center, Pledge for Life Partnership Youth Advisory Council, Project SUN, the Kankakee County Health Department, and Riverside Behavioral Health proudly hosted the annual Mental Health and Wellness Fest, bringing a powerful message of wellness and prevention to the heart of downtown Kankakee.
From 8 AM to 12 PM, the market buzzed with energy as families, students, and community members explored booths filled with local resources, educational materials, and engaging activities focused on mental health, wellness practices, and substance abuse prevention. Whether picking up information or participating in mindfulness exercises, visitors found something for every age and interest.

One of the event's standout features was the entertainment centered around the inspiring theme: "What's Your Go-To?" This message encouraged attendees to reflect on their healthy coping strategies and positive alternatives to manage stress and emotions. Presentations and performances by local students and community members brought this idea to life through pet therapy, music, fire juggling, art therapy, and interactive demonstrations, all of which highlighted the power of creativity and connection in promoting mental wellness. One such presentation was given by Ben King, of King Music, as he spoke of ways to connect with others and relieve stress through music, demonstrating this through a drum circle composed of himself, students and audience members.
With sunshine overhead and a strong turnout from across the community, the festival was not only a celebration of health but a testament to the growing local commitment to mental health awareness and prevention. The Pledge for Life Youth Advisory Council’s leadership and enthusiasm were evident throughout the morning, making the event not just informative, but truly uplifting.
As Mental Health and Wellness Awareness Month continues, the fest sets the tone for meaningful conversations, collective support, and a reminder that when it comes to well-being, we all have a part to play—and a “go-to” to share.
A huge "THANK YOU!" to our sponsors and all who participated in making
2025's Mental Health and Wellness Fest a great success!
