Back to School: Making Room for What Matters

A new school year brings fresh opportunities, new routines, and plenty of excitement—but it can also bring a lot of pressure. Between schoolwork, sports, activities, work, and social commitments, it’s easy for families to fill every minute of the calendar.

This year, consider setting a different kind of goal: make room for what matters most.

Set Healthy Goals

Encourage children and teens to set realistic goals for the school year. Goals don’t have to be about grades or accomplishments. They can include getting enough sleep, eating well, spending time with family, staying active, or making time for hobbies and friends.

Small, healthy choices made consistently can have a big impact on overall well-being.

Don’t Overbook

Being involved is great, but more isn’t always better. A schedule packed from morning until night can leave kids—and parents—feeling stressed, exhausted, and overwhelmed.

Leave room for downtime, family time, and simply being a kid. Rest is not wasted time; it is part of staying healthy.

Choose Healthy Ways to Cope

Stress and pressure are a normal part of growing up. Help young people identify healthy ways to handle difficult emotions and challenging situations—talking with a trusted adult, getting outside, creating something, exercising, listening to music, or simply taking a break.

Most importantly, remind them that alcohol, nicotine, marijuana, and other substances are not healthy ways to manage stress or fit in. Building healthy coping skills now can help young people make healthier choices when they face pressure in the future.

Support One Another

A healthy school year starts with connection. Ask how your child is doing—not just how they are doing in school. Listen without immediately trying to fix everything. Celebrate effort, encourage healthy choices, and remind them that they don't have to handle everything alone.

This school year, let’s focus less on doing it all and more on doing what helps our families thrive.

Here’s to a year of learning, growing, connecting, and making healthy choices—together.
