The Power of a Pause: Helping Youth Make Healthier Choices

There are certain times of year that gently invite us to slow down. To reflect. To take a breath before moving forward.
But what if that idea-the simple act of pausing-was something we practiced every day?
For young people, life moves quickly. Decisions often happen in the moment, surrounded by peer pressure, expectations, and the desire to fit in. In those situations, even a brief pause can be powerful. It creates space-space to think, to evaluate, and to choose.
And that space can make all the difference.
Choosing to walk away from underage drinking or other drug use, for example, is rarely about one big, dramatic decision. More often, it is a series of small moments. A hesitation. A second thought. A quiet inner voice asking, "Is this really what I want?"
As adults, especially parents and caregivers, we play an important role in helping young people build that pause.
Not through lectures, but through conversations.
Simple, open-ended questions can help youth begin to recognize their own decision-making process:
What helps you make good choices when things feel uncertain?
Who do you feel comfortable turning to when you are unsure?
What matters most to you right now?
These conversations do more than pass along information-they build confidence, self-awareness, and trust. They help young people feel prepare, not pressured.
Just as importantly, they remind youth that they are not navigating these moments alone.
A pause may seem small. It may even go unnoticed. But within that moment is something incredibly valuable: the ability to choose a path that aligns with who they are and who they want to become.
This week, consider embracing the pause-in your own life, and in the lives of the young people around you.
Because sometimes, a single moment of reflection can change everything.
